Designed and built in 1992 by the late Gordon Cunningham on a tract of rolling Kane County terrain and featuring an abundance of water, wetlands and wildflowers, Hughes Creek Golf Club offers a scenic challenge for Chicago area golfers who seek good value. Centerstage Golf played the course in early August, 2002; and the staff was pleasantly surprised by the layout, especially the quality of the greens... large, subtle, fast, smooth, true. We spent an enjoyable hour at twilight on the practice green that overlooks much of the front side as well as #18, a rugged uphill Par 5 that parallels #9, an equally tough Par 4 that also climbs from the valley floor the the clubhouse, perched on one of the highest points in the area. The Par 3's required four different clubs, with #11 (at 197 yards uphill) being our favorite. The 12th and 13th (two long 4-pars) and #14 (a short dogleg right) capped a great 4-hole stretch on the back. A good uphill drive on the reachable Par 5 15th hole presents possibilities for birdie...or better...to get back a stroke or two. All-in-all, an enjoyable golf outing and worth the drive from the city.
